"As Above, So Below"
by Vanessa DellaMorte
5 layer Screenprint with metallic inks
Printed by the artist on French Paper Co. Black Licorice Cover at Hoofprint Workshop
This screenprint is inspired by alchemical texts researched in preparation for Basilica Chymica. Derived from the Emerald Tablet and gestured by Baphomet, “As Above, So Below” is a Hermetic phrase used to explain our microcosmic relation to the universe. Often found in occult imagery, the unicursal hexagram is one continuous line and symbolic of this providential reflection. Since one of the main objectives of early chemistry was to create precious metals from bases, this is printed in gold and redesigned as an impossible object.
VANESSA DELLAMORTE is a Chicago native and cult survivor. By electing not to attend mortuary school, she narrowly escaped becoming a fourth generation funeral director—instead, finding solace in the print studio. Though screenprinting is her specialty process, she experiments with multiple techniques, and draws on this experience to collaborate with artists of diverse backgrounds.
